Mentorship
All too often, the difference between someone being successful and not is simply whether that individual was given an opportunity to succeed. I’d be willing to bet that every successful person you know had a teacher or mentor to help guide them on their path. Bill Gates had a mentor in Ed Roberts and Warren Buffet had a mentor in Benjamin Graham. Even Henry Ford had a mentor in Thomas Edison and Edison had a mentor in Franklin Pope (which came to be as a result of Edison saving someone from a runaway train). Suffice to say, there’s some degree of mentorship and teamwork behind practically every success story. Momentum is an incredible organization as it provides that very mentorship to many hard working, bright students.
I have been fortunate to have had mentors in my life that have helped me get to where I am today. One professor in particular has helped me get to where I am today by encouraging me to pursue continued studies in computer science. Without his guidance, I never would have found my love for coding, never would have founded my freelance business, Winograd Apps, and wouldn’t be sharing this story with you today. I started WinogradApps so that I could create tools to help others in their day to day activities. I’m passionate about finding better ways to do things, even if it’s something simple; small changes over time can have a huge impact! I am honored to be able to contribute to the Momentum team behind the scenes with Winograd Apps by creating a more efficient way of managing the vast network of volunteer essay editors. Since I started working with Momentum this summer, I have been wowed by the amazing students and dedicated team of volunteers. It is inspiring to watch such talented individuals make great strides in their careers in just a short period of time. I know these students will not only go on to achieve their dreams, but will also be fortunate enough to give back to those who follow in their footsteps.
