Support is all you need

Hello, my name is Perla Bermudez. I am a senior at DePauw University majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry with the intention of pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine. I recognize that I am blessed to have come across great individuals who have reminded me what it means to not give up in your vision. Although, I know I still have a long way to go to get to and through Veterinary school, when I hit roadblocks I remind myself of the people who have helped me get too where I am at. I think of Momentum Education who believe in me so much to where they invested in my own education.

My experience with Momentum Education has shown me what persistence looks like. Their consistency to host events even amidst this pandemic in order to inform a younger generation about career opportunities and hear from speakers is something I look up to. With that being said, earlier this year I attended one of the events where a former veterinarian speaker talked about her experience as a veterinarian. During the event, I could not help, but notice the faces of people of color at various ages. Not only was attending this event beneficial for me by providing a space to ask questions about what it means to be a veterinarian, but it was opened to younger generations who may still be figuring out what they want to do. I know that for me, I wish I could have had these opportunities that Momentum Education is making available for others.

Furthermore, as a senior, I am still processing the fact that it is my last year of college. Oftentimes, I look back to my first year of college and the overwhelming feelings that built up as my parents left the campus to make another 16 hour drive to Houston. Knowing that I was beginning a new chapter in my life was exciting, yet also scary to embark. However, I knew that throughout those 4 years of experience and beyond I would have my friends and family to support me.

I am currently studying remotely, I have decided to use this time to reach out to the veterinary clinic where I had the opportunity to do my first shadowing experience 3 years ago. That being said, I am currently working as a Veterinary Assistant in order to get more hands on experience with working with animals (cats and dogs) while also assisting during surgeries and monitoring the vitals of pets. This experience has allowed me to become more familiar with what being a veterinarian is like, both the good and stressful times. Furthermore, this experience has made me more confident that being a veterinarian is what I want to dedicate my life to. Thank you Momentum Education for believing in me.
