The Importance of Summer Learning Opportunities

Hello! My name is Priscilla Takyi and I am student at the University of Texas at Austin (hook ’em horns!) majoring in Corporate Communications and minoring in Business. I am proud to serve as the Marketing Coordinator for Momentum Education and provide greater visibility about the events, services, and opportunities Momentum provides to students in the Houston area!

I encourage students to not only attend the career and college events provided by Momentum but also to explore the wide range of summer opportunities Momentum finds for students. As a high schooler I volunteered at the Holocaust Museum, participated in a summer course on Society and Ethics at Rice University, and spent a week in Washington D.C. with the American Civil Liberties Union at their Youth Summer Advocacy program. These programs allowed me the opportunity to expand my learning outside a traditional classroom setting and explore different paths for my future. Partaking in discussions with students all over the country, exploring different cities, and learning from college professors gave me the confidence to attend an institution like the University of Texas and take ownership of my learning once I arrived. I can wholeheartedly say that had I not participated in these programs, the transition to college would have been more difficult for me to navigate.

I urge high school students to examine Momentum’s digital database that includes information on summer programs, college fly-in opportunities, external scholarships, and more to explore potential future colleges and career paths. These experiences can be eye-opening and set you up for success!

I am so excited to to be a part of a team that works hard towards ensuring students are able to achieve success in whichever path they choose to take to and through college!

Thank you!

Priscilla Takyi
